Today I tried my hand at cake decorating. Of course it never turns out the way I see it in my head but it turned out. In all it took me about 4 hours but that includes the time it took to bake the cake and all the stops to take care of little boys I had to do. I would say a good hour of that time was spent trying to figure out just the right consistency of the fondant so that I could roll it out. Once I had that figured out and what little tricks to do to keep it from sticking I moved along just fine. I did a few things that I know to never do again. Like never use water to try to smooth out the fondant and to absorb the corn starch. It leaves little shinny spots on the fondant so unless you plan to do the whole cake that way then don't put water on anything you don't want shinny. Another thing...once I got the fondant for the top layer ready I realized I hadn't put the butter cream on it yet so I had to do that. Once I unrolled the fondant it was stuck in a few places but since I had already been working on it for so long I just put it on as is so there are a few rough places. My bow is far from perfect but it's there! I know for a fact that I don't have the top layer on right. Your are suppose to use these little dows and I just sat the thing on top of it. My main reason for doing this cake was to just see what I could do and see if I enjoyed doing it. I did and I will probably do more in the future. I'm such a dang perfectionist I can't see myself doing any for anyone else. I'm so worried about making it perfect I would probably never get it finished. But for me and Logan this one was just fine. I was going to take it to work for all us girls but then I realized I didn't have anything to take it in. I took the top layer off and Logan and I dug in. It was soooooo good. The marshmallow fondant I made was amazing. Logan has been eating it all day. So I guess the cake is going to stay here to curb my sweet tooth. I love icing!!!!!!!
I guess you would call this the back. I was just putting I had seen in pictures everyone just to see if I could even half way do it. This was my attempt at a fondant ribbon rose.
